Lecture notes/summary from Friday, Oct 8th.

On Friday Kathy's lecture discussed what hold a work of art together, Formally. This consisted of the elements (space, shape, point, line, value, texture, color) and the principles of organization which included many things, like: repetition, the gestalt principles, placement ( which can create isolation and focal points), balance (which can be formal/symmetric or informal/asymmetrical, and depends on how shape, texture, value, color, and position (influences eye direction) are used. Scale and proportion are other principles of organization. All of these will affect a piece's level of harmony and contrast. I liked how in the lecture we were able to actually look at some pieces and get practice identifying these principles in the work. We also had a guest speaker (Howard Sherman) come in after the lecture. Even though I'm an animation major, it was good to hear about some of his experiences in the art industry.
